Is Coaching Therapy?

Several of my friends have shared that they use ChatGPT for advice—whether it’s navigating relationships, working through challenges, or figuring out what to do next in life.

It raises an interesting question:

Is that therapy?

Tools like ChatGPT can offer thoughtful responses, helpful perspectives, and even reflect back patterns in what you’re experiencing. You can ask it to respond using certain frameworks or approaches, and it can feel supportive in the moment.

But it’s important to understand what it is—and what it isn’t.

ChatGPT provides responses based on patterns in data. It can help you think, reflect, and organize your thoughts, but it is not a licensed professional and it is not a replacement for mental health care.

This brings us to a bigger question:

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy is a process guided by a trained, licensed mental health professional. It focuses on emotional healing, mental health, and working through past experiences, trauma, or psychological challenges. Therapists are equipped with clinical training and ethical standards designed to support your well-being at a deeper level.

Coaching, on the other hand, is future-focused. It is about where you are now, where you want to go, and how to get there. A coach works with you to clarify your goals, understand your patterns, and take intentional steps toward creating a life that feels aligned and meaningful.

Coaching is not therapy—and it is not meant to replace it.

A good coach recognizes this distinction. When deeper mental health support is needed, a coach will encourage and refer clients to a licensed therapist.

There is value in reflection, conversation, and guidance. Tools can support you. Coaching can support you. Therapy can support you.

The key is understanding what kind of support you need—and choosing it intentionally.

Because creating a life you truly love starts with giving yourself the right kind of care.
