Announcements

June 9, 2020
Hello Students and Parents,
As we are winding down the year, we have a few important dates to keep in mind. I would also like to say that it has been great to see that everyone has done their best to continue the learning the essential learning goals for the course. Continue to use the activities to supplement your learning as there are some great virtual labs and PhET simulations. You can also “walk through” the other labs on Classlink: McGraw-Hill (currently Unit 2: Module 9 and 10). Students should be able to make predictions of what they would expect to observe and calculate the theoretical value of the substance they are expecting after the lab procedure. They can also use the sample data from the answer keys for the labs to review the lab itself and evaluate their understanding.

Grades:
As a reminder, students will earn the highest grade earned between the baseline grade or their Semester 2 grade. Students may earn an “incomplete” if the student “was failing at the time of the closure and either (1) has not engaged in the essential new learnings or (2) student was engaged in the learnings, “however, did not bring the student to a place of meeting foundational course standards or essential learnings.” (ISD) A student may also earn an “incomplete” even if they have a baseline grade A – D if they “did not engage in the essential new learnings.”

Important Dates:
June 10, 2020 (Wednesday) Mole Road Map Quiz.
This is last quiz of the semester. Students must be able to convert an amount of any substance to moles (mol) , molar mass (g/mol), molar volume (L), or to particles (atoms, molecules, formula units). For example, if given 12 L of Oxygen gas, how many moles of oxygen molecules does this represent? How much would 12 L of oxygen gas weigh?

June 12, 2020 (Friday) Last day to turn in late work and re-takes on Unit 4 and Unit 6 exams.
Starting June 15th, “it is possible that teacher(s) may not have adequate time to assess the work submitted. This late engagement could result in a student receiving an incomplete or not being able to raise their grade from the time of the closure.” (excerpt from ISD “End of Year Grading Update – Spring 2020). Please contact Mrs. Godley to make-up a new date for the re-takes.

June 17, 2020 (Wednesday) Unit 7 Stoichiometry Exam.
This is the last assessment for the semester. There will be an option to select this as “graded” or “no count” again.

June 18 – 22, 2020 Chemistry Scavenger Hunt
There will be a review of the chemistry content using an app called “Goosechase.” Please download the app ahead of time and await instructions for logging in which will be posted on Teams and emailed. More details to come.

June 23, 2020 Last Day of School

Although the circumstances brought on new challenges, I hope you found yourself rising to the occasion and learned some new skills and sharpened your problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These skills will help you in the future as online learning is becoming more commonplace in college and graduate school and fluency in computer skills is a necessary skill for success in the workplace. Also remember, chemistry is happening all around you every day, everywhere. Hopefully, you have learned enough to help you make good decisions as a consumer, doing your best to protect the environment, yourself and your family.

A Microsoft Forms will be available next week to give the student and parents a chance to provide constructive feedback in case we are looking at a hybrid model for school in the fall as well allow students to be reflective of the resources provided and how they may approach online learning in the future. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, comments, and suggestions.

Hope you are all doing well.

June 1, 2020
Happy first day of June! We are heading into our last few weeks of school! Yay!!
1) Retake Unit 4: If you were unable to take the retake for Unit 4 but would still like to attempt it, please let me know. If you are unable to find the time to complete the problem pools but have reviewed in your own way, that is completely acceptable. Simply note how you reviewed in the  Teams/Assignment student work space - where you would have added the problem pools. There is not need for evidence, just a short note.
2) Retake Unit 6: It is postponed 1 week (June 8th, Mon) to allow students to review their results. Test results will be posted from 7 am to 7 pm Monday, June 1st. The same policy on academic integrity apply. Please do not use electronic devices to copy or disseminate any part of the test. Feel free to take notes and discuss them in Office Hours this week. NOTE: The retake does not have the same exact questions but cover the same topics. The more practice problems you attempt, the more comprehension and experience you will gain. Again, if you are unable to find the time to complete the problem pools but have reviewed in your own way, that is completely acceptable. Simply note how you reviewed in the  Teams/Assignment student work space - where you would have added the problem pools. There is not need for evidence, just a short note.
3) All grades including quiz corrections will be updated by midnight. Please check Skyward and your student work and send the teacher an email if you have any questions or concerns.
  • DCA Bonus points (10% of the points earned) from the District Common Assessment was added to Skyward in the test category, thus, everyone should see an increase your grades. Your baseline grade may have changed (improved).
  • Regrades: Please submit regrades, if any, as soon as is possible. They will be graded in the order they are received. All new re-grades turned in since Friday will be graded by the end of the week. The last day of accepting student work/ re-grades is June 12th. Note from the Issaquah School District "End of Year Grading Update - Spring 2020":
    • "If students only begin to engage on or after June 15th, it is possible that teacher(s) may not have adequate time to assess the work submitted. This late engagement could result in a student receiving an incomplete or not being able to raise their grade from the time of the closure."
  • Semester 2 grades: ISD has released an "End of Year Grading Update - Spring 2020." Please review Skyward and Teams (Assignments) to verify that your grades have been updated as meeting standards and engagement are both considered for earning letter grades or an incomplete.
    • We understand that these are unprecedented times and that additional life events are impacting students academic efforts. There are also general challenges to adapting to an online learning environment.
    • Please remember that you simply need  to do your best to learn what you can of the remaining essential learning goals. Please communicate any needs or modifications to the assigned activities/labs that may help you during these last few weeks.
Please make sure you respond to emails and are receiving the updates from Teams. There are 8 hours a week minimum of Office Hours per week. We can work through activities together, review and clarify content. If possible, come with a friend so we can utilize the full interactive capabilities of Teams video meeting. Hope you and your families are doing well!

Updates/ Announcements
1) There is no semester final.
2) Unit 7 test is postponed until Wednesday, Jun 17, 2020.
3) Grades are currently being updated. If your work needs to be re-graded because you added additional work on a different One Note page, below or to the side of the actual student work documents that were assigned and reviewed, please send the teacher an email explaining where to locate your work. If you have already done so, then do not send a second email. All requests for a re-grade will be addressed at the end of the week.
4) Quiz corrections will be added after all the current grades are entered.
5) If you have late work, please turn it in on Teams: Assignments and send an email to the teacher that your work is ready for review.
6) You have a student email account with a district address. When you log into www.office.com simply click on the Outlook icon and you will see emails sent through Teams, etc. Through your Outlook account you will see a calendar for all of your classes. If your other teachers note activities and assessments on the calendar, you can click on all of your classes to see one main calendar to identify any conflicts and prepare for each day accordingly. See the attached image. The daily announcements will be posted on the Outlook calendar (as well as through the Teams: General: Posts) and you can decide which best fits your needs.
7) "This week at a glance" is a photo of the Daily Announcements/Activities taken from One Note: Content Library: Housekeeping: Quarter 4.

How to "Chemistry" Online in 25 Minutes
How to Navigate Teams
  1. Do only the 25 min. It’s actually what I’ve said in class all year long. There’s no need to dwell on activities in fear of having "incorrect" answers nor be paralyzed at one place in the activity nor attempt activities BEFORE watching the Educreations lectures/tutorials nor spend time "googling" every question attempting to simply answer problems instead of learning and applying content. Just complete activities the best you can in 25 minutes. Remember, I’ve only ever wanted to know what YOU think, which is usually correct or at the very least, definitely on the right path.
  2. Make sure you know how to navigate Teams (how to save important announcements/ access & turn in assignments, access One Note Quarter 4 calendar, etc.)
  3. Remember, every unit has an introduction and a review section in One Note. (see image below) You can access One Note directly from Teams. At the beginning of every Unit, review the learning goals and outline a plan:
    1. It is strongly recommended to
      1. Watch the Educreations Videos
      2. Attempt graded activities and assessments
      3. Ask questions or review work in Office Hours at least 1/week for a few minutes or the entire session.
      4. Select an option to supplement the learning
      5. Stay within the 25 minutes.
    2. How to Supplement:
      1. Attempt the daily activities (non-graded & graded) and assessments and then supplement by reading the online or hard copy textbook & do problem pools , or
      2. Attempt the daily activities (non-graded & graded) and assessments only, or
      3. Attempt only graded activities and assessments and then supplement by reading the online or hard copy textbook & do problem pools , or
      4. Attempt only graded activities and assessments and then supplement by reading the online or hard copy textbook only
      5. Any part or combination of the above supplemental options or your own ideas
Note: I have already adjusted the activities scheduled, added extra review days, and postponed the assessment for this Unit to slow down the pace as, historically, students enjoy this Unit (Chemical Reactions) above all others. If necessary, we can consider postponing the exam a second time.

Ultimately, remember that we are in this together. Please email the teacher and come to Office Hours to ask any clarifying questions or work together on activities. Work with peers in study groups. Simply make your best attempt at learning and use the resources provided, including your teacher! And please take good care as life begins to evolve over the next couple of months.

Update: Assessments
  1. Students have their own Quiz-Exam private channel in Teams. All future quizzes/exams will be posted here. **All assessments are available from 7 am – 7 pm
  2. Duration of Quizzes (15 – 30 min) and Duration of Exams (45 – 60 min)
  3. Students will now have the option to take the assessment as a “no count only.” This is an opportunity for those students who are satisfied with their baseline grade and would like to take the test solely as a check for understanding. All other students working towards specific goals for Semester 2 will take the test as “graded only”. A “no count” score will not be changed to a “graded” score nor will a “graded” score turn into a “no count.” The option will be available at the bottom of the form and selected before submission.
  4. By participating in the “no count only” exam time, students understand that there is no option to revert this decision. Students must communicate with the teacher if students need to take the alternate make-up exam on an agreed upon make-up day.

April 20, 2020

Essential learning has begun this week and will continue through the remainder of the school year. Although the online education was unexpected, this is a one in a lifetime chance during high school where you can gain experience in building your own schedule to maximize the hours when you feel you are most efficient. You will know your strengths and weaknesses in preparation for future online opportunities that may arise and work on building a higher level of autonomy in your learning.
Please watch this video prepared by Skyline administration and utilize the graphic organizers provided for you on the school website. Students must utilize the resources available (all of which were introduced and utilized before the school closure):
  • Announcements: Teams (General: Posts) Make sure you have the program set to send you notifications.
  • Weekly Calendar: One Note
  • Lectures: Educreations (1 - 2 per week)
  • Demonstration Videos: Seesaw (1 - 3 per week) Note* Please update the Seesaw app on your devices regularly.
  • Assignments Summarized: Teams (Generals Tab: Assignments)
  • Resources:
    • Online: Classlink: McGraw-Hill "Inspire" and Pearson "Easybridge" (worksheets are in specific sections in One Note: Content Library)
    • At Home Resources: Chemistry (Prentice Hall)
  • Post Student Work:
    • Assignments/Labs: One Note in the correct unit, BUT make sure you click "Turn in" through Teams & Seesaw (Activities)
    • Quizzes: Teams (Unit: Microsoft Forms) (Make sure you are in the correct unit.)
    • Assessments: To Be Determined.
Throughout the semester we may use additional programs/apps/ websites (ex. Flinn At-Home Labs and PhET Simulations) but they will be linked through One Note and Teams. In fact, I have linked the website, Classlink, and Seesaw on Teams. See the "Tour of Teams" to understand how to navigate Teams.
Use the One Note Calendar: Quarter 4 for details for all daily activities and graded assignments. In One Note, the graded assignments are identified with ***. Demonstrations are identified with ** and supplemental (optional, but recommended) practices are identified with *. All graded assignments will be linked through Teams and should show up as a page in your One Note notebook.
Use the FAQ page for commonly asked questions about meetings, class, grades and technology.

You have literally been training for the school closure all year using laptops on a regular basis. I have every confidence that each of you will find continued success or huge improvements with less distraction and more autonomy. Chemistry is occurring within in you and all around you, which I will show you doing at-home demonstrations. If you dyed eggs during Easter, that's chemistry related to bonding! Making ice cream relates to thermochemistry as does anything with cooking. With the approval, guidance and supervision of your parent/guardian, please "show off" your mastery of chemistry on Seesaw. I will be adding small experiments you can try at home if you happen to have the supplies. Please share any cool experiments you find or invent or any interesting and related chemistry news/discoveries happening in the world.

April 13, 2020

March 29, 2020
Hello everyone!
We are starting Week 9, the third week of school closure and the second week of review of Unit 2.
Fortunately, if you have been following instruction and class routine since September 2019, we are still following the SAME routine. All students should make sure they are in One Note and can access the daily calendar under One Note: Content Library: Housekeeping: Quarter 3.  The weekly power points are located on the pages under Quarter 3.

Activities:
All suggested review, math skills, and labs are OPTIONAL at this time (although can be completed, modified with the answer keys and submitted for VOC points). Again, use this week to review Unit 4 content using as much or as little of the recommended activities noted on the Quarter 3 calendar and reiterated on Teams. Although there are a variety of resources we utilize, students should continue to stay in the routine of reviewing the Quarter 3 calendar and Weekly Power Points and using one main resource as a "textbook"  for reference (Textbook issued from Skyline or an online textbook from either McGraw-Hill "Inspire" or Pearson "Easybridge", both accessible through Classlink). In order to earn VOC points using the optional activities, they must be completed by the following Monday. For example, Week 9 activities will only be accepted for VOC points if completed, modified, and uploaded to One Note by the Monday at the start of Week 10. An exception will be made for Week 8 activities as students may have still been in an adjustment period from the school closure. Thus Monday, April 6, 2020, I will accept all optional activities from weeks 8 AND 9 that a student chooses to complete and modify and submit on One Note in the section "Online Enrichment Activities" for VOC points. Emails are NOT required as follow up as I will be checking submissions of activities through TEAMS. All students are at different places in their learning, thus, select only activities that assist or interest you at this time.

Online Resources:
The following resources will be continued to be utilized and should be accessible to all students:
  • Microsoft Office:
    • One Note (for agenda, activities, resources, power points)
    • Teams (for communication - recommended by the district and will have the access to the optional assignments for all students and be reflective of what is scheduled on the daily Quarter 3 calendar and provided in the One Note or Classlink)
    • Forms (for surveys, possible student formative assessments - aka. quizzes - if allowed by the district)
  • Classlink (for online textbook, tutorials, activities, lesson checks)
  • Educreations (for lectures)
  • SeeSaw (for communication, questions and answers worked out, student work for VOC points)
Other links may be used on occasion for brainstorming, sharing ideas, taking formative assessments (ex. quizzes) (Padlet, Google Forms, etc.)
**If students use more than 4 apps on their cell phones or home computer or have used multiple websites for social media or online shopping, they will be very comfortable using technology in their new online learning environment. If you have limited access to technology at home and require additional tools or support, please contact me with any questions.

Re-grades:
All re-grades must be completed and uploaded for review in One Note by Friday, April 3, 2020. Make sure they are not icons to click and download. They should also be images that are right-side up and be legible.  If you need to see a graded lab/assignment that is currently in my possession, feel free to email me to send you a copy of your work so that you can modify your work to complete the re-grade. The goal is to RE-LEARN for the re-grade. So, ask any clarifying questions during Office Hours or via Teams/email/ Seesaw.

What's New?
The main difference between now and before the school closure is the delivery of lecture is only online through Educreation (before Educreation was an additional resource for lecture in addition to in person lecture/class discussion) and laboratory experiments can not be conducted but will be delivered as Demonstrations by the instructor, virtual laboratory simulations, or suggested "Kitchen Chemistry" using common household products that should only be performed by a student with an adult guardian present.

Most of this announcement is repeat information. I know you all have the capability of making this a productive learning experience. The pandemic has made humans become more innovative and creative in their approach to life. There has been more collaboration and community. Our problem-solving skills are being fine-tuned and expanded. Your ability to adapt and evolve will determine the outcome of these unprecedented times. I have faith in you and am here to support you. Stay positive and stay healthy. See you at the class meeting this week!

ACTION ITEMS

1. Fill out the Chemistry Support Survey
2. Reply on Teams (Microsoft has supposedly fixed the bugs, so those of you who could not reply/ post, please try again. Email me if you are still experiencing issues with Teams).
3. Start getting into a routine with Chemistry.
  • Technology Access: Office One Note and Teams (Daily calendar, resources), Classlink (tutorials, activities - McGraw-Hill Inspire and Pearson EasyBridge) Seesaw (announcements, activities), Educreations (lectures)
  • Office Hours
  • Activities: Select at least 1 activity per week for review/ enrichment.

CLASS MEETING
Class Meeting during the first Office Hour on Teams Tuesday, March 31, 2020, for Periods 3 and 4 and Wednesday, April 1, 2020 for Periods 5 and 6 (Even) and Thursday, April 2, 2020 for Period 7 (See above for the times). Please plan on joining the first Office Hour next week so that I can explain what the week will look like and answer questions. Hopefully, you have been staying in routine using the class calendar (Content Library: Housekeeping: Quarter 3) and the weekly power point to catch up the review we started this week. If not, use the weekend to review the Activities on your One Note Calendar from this week and have questions (Chemistry or Logistics) ready  for the class meeting.

ACTIVITIES
Every day there is a different short optional enrichment review activity. The activities will mostly come from the two pilot programs we have been using through Classlink. All of the activities are optional. One Note will be checked weekly to note students doing the optional, but recommended enrichment activities. They will be going into Skyward as a NO COUNT to measure student activity during these these review weeks. Students should upload work in the section "Online Enrichment Activities" in their One Note.  "Work" may be notes from the "Explore and Explain" activities that are mainly tutorials. There are also worksheets for Virtual Investigations Small Scale Labs or practices, Math Skills and Lesson Checks, directly through the pilot. You may consider doing screen shots for the activities directly found on Classlink. Students also may be asked to document their ChemArt or Kitchen Chemistry with photos/videos on Seesaw Activities.
NOTE: Although classes will only meet twice a week through Teams/Seesaw, the activities recommended each day are for all classes.

OFFICE HOURS
Both Teams and Seesaw will be open during Office Hours to work out problems/questions for students. Seesaw is a great platform to use as a "white board". In theory, I (or your peers) can answer questions verbally on Teams while working it out through a Seesaw Post and then upload and save the work to the Feed on Seesaw. Suggested Topics are identified on the One Note calendar. However, feel free to ask questions on any chemistry topic that you are reviewing.
NOTE: Attendance is not required, however, it will be taken each Office Hour to identify the utilization of these resources. Students do not have to be on both Teams and Seesaw. Students can also choose to only use Seesaw and ask questions through the Office Hours Post during the Office Hour. However, if you only use Seesaw, please comment that you are present.  If students would like to join the Office Hour on Teams, there is an option to turn off "video" if students want to hear and be heard but not seen.

Please go to One Note: Content Library: Housekeeping: Quarter 3 to this week to review this week's (week 8) power point to understand the expectation this week to review material learned before the school closure in a process of mastery. There is a voice link that covers the Online Learning Norms for those slides of the power point which covers common questions regarding re-grades, VOC points, and this week's topic we are reviewing.

Action Item: Please reply to post in Teams.

Weekly Power Points: These power points, the Quarter Calendar in One Note:Content Library: Housekeeping and Seesaw will be very important for the Chemistry Online Class for the upcoming weeks we are in school closure. Please make sure you touch base with the teacher on a weekly basis verifying that you have access to Chemistry, all updates, announcements and the enrichment review activities. All activities are suggested and optional but strongly recommended for students to deepen their understanding of the content. Continue to review all content even if you believe you have reached mastery. All contributions and participation in any Padlet, Seesaw, or online Activity through Classlink and One Note can be used as demonstration of student comprehension and be submitted for VOC points.

Hello, everyone!
I hope each of you and your families are doing well. I just wanted to touch base on a few things before we can move forward next week.
Please email me if:
(1) you are experiencing problems accessing your One Note class. Microsoft was updating the program last week which caused some of you to lose access to your One Note. This should be resolved but, if not, please let me know so we can address any issues.
(2) If you have missing work from before the school closure, please upload the pages to One Note and follow up with an email. All grades will be updated by Monday, March 23rd, so please hold onto other questions about grades until then.
Teams:
(3) In order to make sure that every student has access to learning, please reply as soon as possible to Teams: General: Posts. You will see a specific POST regarding technology at home.  Just click "Reply” under that specific post.
Skyward:
(4) I also noted when I sent out messages this year to all families and students that some email addresses were not active and the messages were not deliverable. Please review Skyward and update any and all contact information.
We will talk about the use of other apps and programs next week. The main focus this week is to figure out which communication system will be the most effective.
Thanks for your patience this week as we await more directions on how we will be proceeding. I hope you are doing well. I miss seeing you every day and hearing your voices. Stay safe and healthy.
