UNIT 2 LEARNING GOALS WHAT? This unit covers the general information about matter and the energy transfer between states of matter.
Topic 1: Classification of Matter and Properties of Matter
Topic 2: States of Matter
Topic 3: Meausuring Energy
WHY? Students have always known about the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. But now students will understand how pressure and temperature work together to allow substances to be found at these different states. Distinguishing between substances versus mixtures and physical versus chemical properties and changes will allow students to understand the story behind chemical reactions. HOW? There are many ways to study matter at this particulate level deeply and thoroughly. There are at least 3 associated labs (physical and chemical changes, heating curve, and calorimetry) and some interactive graphics about heating curves and exploring with dry ice.
