Learning Goal: Students will be working with equipment, tools, and chemicals which are harmful if proper technique and caution is not practiced. In order to promote personal, room, lab, and materials safety students are not allowed to eat or drink nor engage in horseplay in the lab area. Students must pass the lab safety exam with a 90% in order to perform experiments in the lab.
Students are expected to
know the evacuation route,
know the location of the fire extinguishers, fire blanket, and spill kits
know how and when to use the fire safety equipment
read labels and utilize the GHS symbols and other safety information (SDS)
place waste in appropriately labeled containers, and most importantly,
be prepared for lab before the day of the experiment.
Preparation includes reading the instructions and writing the initial sections (title, purpose, materials and illustrated apparatus (if any), procedures, safety concerns and data tables (if any) of the lab report.
Students must wear closed toed shoes and approved lab goggles when working the lab.
Understand the inherent danger of wearing contacts during lab. Students should wear glasses during labs that fit under the approved lab goggles.
No exceptions. Noncompliance of lab safety regulations could result in removal from the science laboratory without the option of makeups, referral to school administration, and possibly loss of credit for the course.
